Newsroom Ready: Bloc to debate bill on French language proficiency for new citizens
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet says his party will debate a bill Thursday that would require anyone applying for Canadian citizenship in Quebec to demonstrate a functional proficiency in French. The discussion comes after Emmanuella Lambropoulos, a Liberal MP from Montreal’s Saint-Laurent riding, told the official languages committee last week that the idea of French language decline is a myth, before reversing her statement amid a social media backlash.
