Poilievre promises life sentences for fentanyl trafficking

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says his government would bring in mandatory life sentences for people convicted of trafficking or producing more than 40 mg of fentanyl. The Supreme Court of Canada struck down a number of mandatory minimum penalties in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in 2016, but Poilievre says his proposal supports the Charter rights to life, liberty and security of the person.
