Experts say the return of sports is risky as COVID pandemic continues

Experts say the return of professional sports will create risk of transmitting COVID to other teams and the community.
They say that if professional sports go ahead, they should be in a bubble.
The NBA’s training camps are underway.
And the NHL is in talks to bring the season back.
Keeping teams in social bubbles was a success last season in preventing COVID-19 spread.
But some experts say the best thing to do right now is suspend play until the pandemic is under control.
They say that bubbling is hard on players to keep up for an entire season.
They spent months locked down away from their families -- and even that doesn’t always work.
Team Canada’s selection camp for World Junior Hockey is currently under quarantine after positive cases.
Even if they have a negative test, that doesn’t mean necessarily that the next day they’re not going to become positive and that they’re potentially spreading the virus, Jason Kindrachuk, a virologist with the University of Manitoba. .
Kindrachuk says frequent testing is needed to identify infections quickly, but that puts strain on the health care system .
Curling Canada is planning events in a protected environment in Calgary.
The National Women’s Hockey League will also bubble in New York starting in January .
It's tough for lower profile sports because they face the threat of losing fans if they disappear for too long .
If you’re not even on TV, then you can quickly find yourself irrelevant, Moshe Lander, a sports economist with Concordia University
