Newsroom Ready: Fiscal update shows deficit lower than expected but COVID-19 spending still dominates
The Trudeau Liberals have found themselves with a financial windfall from a better-than-expected economic rebound that lowered the deficit further from a near-historic level. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s update released today shows that the deficit for this year is on track to hit $144.5 billion, below the government’s previous forecast of a $154.7-billion deficit.
