Morneau pledges bridge loans to help big companies survive
In a move reminiscent of the 2008 financial crisis, the federal government is promising loans to help even very large companies survive the economic freeze-up caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finance Minister Bill Morneau said airlines and non-essential retailers are examples of otherwise healthy companies that can't do business now, but could survive and resume operations later if they get government help now.
