New guide for babies at risk of allergies
The Canadian Paediatric Society has updated its food guide for babies at high risk of developing allergies. The new guidelines suggest that the babies be offered common allergenic foods at six months of age to help prevent sensitivities later. Babies who are ready for food sooner can start as young as four months of age, but not earlier. The recommendations follow a recent shift in global thinking on when to introduce potential allergens. Those allergens include cow's milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish and wheat. Babies are considered at high risk if they have a history of eczema, or a parent or sibling with allergies. The society advises offering potential allergens one at a time to gauge reaction, and if the foods are tolerated well, offer them a few times a week.
