Black history fading in small Alberta village
Vant Hayes is the last man standing in terms of Black history in the village of Breton, 110 kilometres southwest of Calgary. His grandparents, along with their children, and dozens of other Black families moved to the area from Oklahoma in the early 1900s lured by the promise of free land and an increase in discrimination in many parts of the southern United States.
